Revolvers: SandW vs Ruger
I'm looking at getting a .357 revolver and narrowed down my choices to Ruger GP-141 and S&W 686 plus. Aside from the extra round that comes with 686 plus, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each model? Which gun between the two is a better choice?

Thanks yooper,
My intended use is simply to have a nice quality revolver. Just because I can No, for real, I don't have much exposure to firearms and would like to get one for home defence. I want to get a pistol and a revolver and see what I'm more comfortable with. With regard to revolvers, I was considering a Taurus 608, which would be nice since it's an 8-shooter, but have read that the construction is inherently weaker than that of S&W. I also don't really care for the hideous S&W model 629 8-shooter (in addition to it being a bit pricey). I wanted to get a 4" barrel for better handling in home defence situations. You're right, I'm gonna need to shoot the gun, before I buy it, to see how it fits, my question had more to do with wether either of these guns has a better quality or if there are any other issues.

For the home defense gun I'm leaning towards Beretta 92FS Brigadier. I read and heard a lot of good things about it. I mostly like it's reliability record. I think most of my practice will be with that gun. Again, I'm gonna have to try it out before I commit. And I figured I'd get a revolver as a backup... so many guns, so little money...

Those are all good guns and a lot of them, like your P94 pack a lot of ammo, unfortunately, in NJ I am limited to 10 rounds in any DA auto.
I thought of getting the 1911 in 45ACP, but it's only 8 rounds and they ARE expensive, so I figured, I'd get something that I could afford to shoot.

I read up on Glocks that they've been dropped from a helicopter and didn't go off on their own; then that same gun was fired and went off as it was supposed to. I guess it depends on your comfort level. Some folks like the security of an extra safety, others would rather just be able to draw and shoot. I think it's all in the training. A well trained individual with a gun on safe will outshoot a thug with a gun without safety any day of the week.

Those lipsticks.. you never know if they're gonna get into the trigger guard. Hey, I heard CIA made 1-shot lipstick guns for their female agents.
I noticed that XD gun had a backstrap safety in addition to the trigger safety. How did that feel, does it affect the draw in any way?

The gun laws in NJ are such that I have to wait several months before they approve my gun license. In the mean-time I can make a final decision on what I want. I like the reliability of a revolver, but my concern is limited capacity. In combat situations only 1 out of 4 shots hits/stops the target, so if you have multiple intruders (like it happens in about half of the breakins) where does that leave you, if you're armed with a six-shooter? I could get an 8-shooter like S&W model 629, but I'd be sacrificing in caliber and they haven't proven as reliable as good ol' six guns.
Right now I'm considering S&W 4506 semi-auto or SIG P-220. They've proven themselves with many police departments. Hold 8+1 rounds of 45ACP. Good looking stainless steel guns. Should be enough to whack two intruders, if need be.
I am totally aware that I'd need to practice with this gun to make it a reliable weapon. The best way to do it is to make it a hobby to maintain your gun skills. I know exactly what you mean about folks not knowing how to operate their guns. I was at a friends house last night and he was showing me his SIG 9mm that he bought 4 years ago. He rocked the slide and then couldn't figure out how to de-cock the hammer. Probably that should not be his primary defense gun.

yooper,
I can't make up my mind: with .40S&W I get two more rounds in the magazine, which is 25% more than in P220. But with .45ACP, I have a peace of mind knowing that I have the best cartridge I'll even need in a pistol. Then again, either one of these calibers is a vast improvement over a 9mm, so I'll have to think what's more important. I think you gotta be comfortable with your gun no matter which one you choose, you can't have doubts in the back of your mind in a combat situation. If you're convinced that a side-by-side shot gun is the best defense against a burglar and you know how to use it, then you'd be better off with this shot gun than with a semi auto pistol that you have no faith in. Am I making any sense?

Harvey,
Desert Eagle is some gun, it's one of those things that'll make you sh*t in your pants if someone is pointing one at you, though I don't understand how they managed to fit only eight rounds of .44 magnum into an almost 5 pound gun.
yooper,
Per NJ moronic regulations, I can have 10 rounds in a pistol magazine. A P-220 in .45ACP lets me have 9 (8+1) which is two rounds under the total I can have in a gun (10 in a mag + 1 in the chamber). A .40S&W lets me have all 11. From my perspective, I'll take a greater stopping power of a .45 over having 11 rounds vs. 9. Like someone said elsewhere, if 9 rounds of .45 doesn't do the job, a pistol was the wrong tool for the job to begin with.
